Feeling crept into awareness, subtle flavor I nearly missed lingers on my tongue. Alone I stand starring at the mirror, my face starring back at me. Flushed red frowning, puffy anger clinging to cheeks like rusted barnacles, all this I feel from the emptiness surrounding me, when your not here.

My imagination is pulling away from reality so quickly. I am sure my mind is beginning to resemblance a dirty clothes hamper, tangled and rotting from within.

I miss your touch upon my mind, your whisper in my ears. Only you can deliver a wretch like me, only your scent can awaken me bringing me to my senses. Only you hold the magic, you bare the fruit of life that I seek so deeply within my shattered shell. Only you…. only you. Only your touch can coax the blood back into my lifeless corpse, only you, no one else.

Sally smushed her nose against cold glass catching sight of her new car causing an audible sigh through her whole body.

Into the glass Sally whispered “this is my moment” then with school girl exuberance she bounded down the stairs to take possession.

BMW sent new Electric Mini’s to the America, only one to New England, that one was Sally’s.

Behind the wheel Sally popped one lone M&M into her mouth, she savored then bit into its chocolate as she inched her heel knowingly pressing the accelerator moving the car quietly and electrically toward someplace no one had gone before.

Underground Chocolate

Breathing imperceptibly while picking the lock at Underground Chocolate, Sally slipped inside.

Giddy with anticipation Sally gave herself a hug and asked “ where’s the new chocolate?” The silence gave her the permission she sought.

Opening a box containing 6 truffles Sally allowed the intoxicating aroma to engulf her, bringing forth a tear of happiness.

Gently Sally rubbed a truffle around her lips till finally her teeth pierced the delicate shell, releasing a cascade of rich decadent chocolate into her mouth.

Sally was the first outsider to taste this new chocolate, this new self-indulgence.

It was worth all the risk.

Steamer Trunk

Her thoughts got lost in the the neighborhood as she walked.

Lead paint pealing, washing into the gutters mixing with fluids from obnoxious realms, flowing into their taps.

Yellow and gray floating in and out of apt windows, children’s lungs tattooed with rust.

Sally pushed through the fear, sweat beading like pearls on spandex.

Hurried little laughs echoed from doorways.

Inching her stilettos over the smooth cobblestones Sally felt people watching her, following her.

Opening the door to her grandfathers old factory. Holding her breath unlocking the steamer trunk, reaching inside with one quick motion, pulling out her Teddy Bear.

Sally’s Choice

Starring from under the pillow Sally saw the suns first ray meekly working its way through the old cracked blinds. It winked at Sally just as all the rays caught it flooding the room with effervescent light.

Smiling, Sally curled then stretched, lingering for a moment realizing her life was better then a dream.

Downstairs she poured coffee, sat in her favorite chair watching the birds hop and soar in the yard.

Today Sally had just one decision to make. Which door would she go through? The front door or the back door.

Smiling Sally choose neither, because she could.

Something’s Happening

Something’s happening here and Sally didn’t know what it was, did she? Sally felt puzzled, she felt excited at not knowing what was happening.

Sally picked up a couple of struts bolted them together stood back to expanded her perspective. What she saw emboldened her to create more with the erector set.

Piece by piece her vision grew. Sally could see each strut morphing into thoughts from her mind. A moment before her thoughts were chaotic now they had taken shape.

Sally’s external dream map allowed her to follow, to touch all the twists and turns her imagination could create.

NXNE The Antidote

With diminishing hopes and racing thoughts Sally neared the bakery door, she peered into the darkened kitchen with hopes of seeing someone, someone who would sell her a cake.

Sally was near tears and about to decompose into a heap right there on main street when she noticed an envelop taped to the door, it just said Sally. Reaching out with her shaking hand opening the envelop she read the contents.

Dear Sally, Sorry we closed early please join us at NXNE (north by north east) the antidote for all those left behind. Sally then knew that not going to SXSW (south by south west) was really ok.

The invitation was waiting when Sally turned on her computer. Reading the email she thought “I need more then cake to chase away this mood”. Still, it was Saturday and a few sweet bites just might help.

Fork in hand Sally went to the bakery, headed to the sample table and went from one end to the other. With each bite her feelings of not belonging desolved just a bit more.

Leaving the bakery Sally walked six or seven miles assuaging her guilt, then hailed a taxi for home.

The bakery’s computer waited to send Sally a new sweet invitation.
